Until the Newaygo and Northport State roads were built in 1860 the area was not easy to get to. The first sawmill that was not located on a river was at Cadillac. Lumbering played a key role. Mesick hosts the Mushroom Festival each May and is known as the "Mushroom Capital of Michigan".
