The Chippewa and Ottawa Indians occupied the area. Lumbering was moving North and settlers were attracted to the timber in the area. Two fires increased the demand for lumber to rebuild what was destroyed. Today tourism helps the economy. Houghton Lake is Michigan's largest inland lake.
