The first white pioneers settled in the Otsego Lake area. Lumbering and farming were the main industries. Today Otsego County is a big all season recreation area. Gaylord is known as the "Ski Capital of Michigan", It also is halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. It hosts the Alpine Festival each year in the summer.
